Public Health Problem
Type 2 diabetes is the commonest diabetes type occurring when the blood sugar/glucose
is too high. It is an impairment of how the body regulates and utilizes sugar or glucose as fuel
(CDC, n.d.). Type 2 diabetes may be a long-term chronic condition that occurs due to excess
sugars/glucose circulating in a person's bloodstream. In the long run, high blood sugar levels
result in nervous, circulatory, and immune systems disorders. There are two interrelated issues
in type 2 diabetes (CDC, n.d.). First, the pancreas fails to secrete enough insulin, and second,
the cells respond improperly to insulin, making it hard to take in less sugar.
Although type 2 diabetes can begin in childhood and adulthood, it is more common
among older people. Nonetheless, the increase in the obesity menace has increased the rates of
type 2 diabetes among children. It is worth noting that type 2 diabetes has no known or
scientifically proven cure (Wareham & Herman, 2016). But, eating healthy, exercising, and
shedding some weight helps manage the disease. Also, there are instances where exercise and
diet do not work, and thus it is proper to seek insulin therapy and diabetes medication.
Type 2 diabetes is a significant public health issue because it affects over 400 million
adults globally. This disease is a significant global public health issue impacting those aged
between 20 to 79 years. Current statistics reveal that type 2 diabetes has affected nearly half a
billion people, and in the next decade, the number will surpass the 600 million mark (AlLawati, 2017). In the U.S, nearly 12 percent of the adult population has diabetes. It is a public
health issue because it boosts the risk of early death when the disease is not managed well.
Also, type 2 diabetes-related complications impact the quality of life (Gruss et al., 2019). The
increased global burden of type 2 diabetes has adverse implications on health care systems and
economic impacts on people. It has the highest cost in health expenditures globally. The risk
