Journal Entry
Officers need to recognize how their early experiences in life and later adult experiences shape their perceptions and “filters” about people from groups different from their own. What do you remember learning about various ethnic and racial groups when you were young? Did you grow up in an environment of tolerance, or did you hear statements such as “That’s the way they are,” or “You’ve got to be careful with those people,” or “They are lazy (or dishonest, etc.)”? Also, be prepared to discuss your experiences as an adult with different groups and how those experiences may be affecting your perceptions.
