at an concession stand, five hotdogs and four hamburgers cost $13.25; four hotdogs and five hamburgers cost $13.75. find the cost of one hotdog and the cost of one hamburger

Oct 21st, 2017

Let x = cost of one hotdog

Let y = cost of one hamburger

Then,

5x + 4y = 13.25  and

4x + 5y = 13.75

Multiply the first equation by 5 and the second equation by 4 to get

25x + 20y = 66.25

16x + 20y = 55.00

Subtract the second from the first to get

9x = 11.25

x = $1.25

Plug x into the original second equation to get

4(1.25) + 5y = 13.75

6 + 5y = 13.75

5y = 7.75

y = $1.55
