History
Art can be used as a way through which history can be preserved. Since its inception, art has been
a way of record-keeping certain events, beliefs or cultural idiosyncrasies. Though art is not created
with the purpose of record-keeping, when artists are inspired by ongoing events or beliefs, they
can portray that within their art. Sometimes, it is explicitly done; as we can see in those paintings
that portray grandiose historical events, like Washington’s journey through the Hudson or
Napoleon Bonaparte riding into battle. As such, art pieces can be used as a lens through which
history can be examined. Because of its innate subjectivity, though, these portrayals are bound to
be artistically biased.

Protest
In modern history, art has become an outlet through which ideologies and actions can be explicitly
presented or challenged. Though it should not be its primary purpose, art can be infused with
societal commentary, whether in favor or against the status quo. Like Picasso’s “Guernica”, which
features a harrowing portrayal of the devastation of the Spanish Civil War, to the poster movement
that surged during the War in Vietnam, artist have turned their works into powerful expressions of
dissent. It is possible to argue that all art is political to an extent, as it presents an idea to an audience
that can either support or suppress it. Regardless, when it is made with the intention of starting a
conversation, art can be a powerful tool.

Still today, art is very important for religious practices. The Vatican may no longer commission or
inspire great composers to pen them symphonies, but the inclusion of art into mass, service or any
other event, is always welcome. Likewise, the creation of the buildings where religious gatherings
take place can sometimes require a lot of artistic vision, like the stunning Mosques in Saudi Arabia.
In the United States, different genres of music have seen incursions of Christian performers who
share their beliefs with the world through the music they crea...
