Basics of Essay Writing with an Example that follows ey Mr. Mansor Opening paragraph (keep it general- NOT specific): must be 5 sentences minimum First sentence- have a "hook"- ask a question/ give a quotel etc. Second sentence- give the WHAT (explain/ define the topic) Third sentence- give the WHERE (geographically) Fourth sentence- give the WHEN (date or time period) Fifth sentence- give the THESIS (what the rest of the essay will focus on; it should relate to the essay question itself) Body paragraphs (make it specific): must be 8 or more sentences Start the first sentence by relating to what is in the thesis. If there are three points in the thesis such as three reasons for the Industrial Revolution- have a separate body paragraph for each and mention the reason in the first sentence each time and then expand on it with examples, data, details, etc. (Two APA citations go in body paragraphs!) DO NOT PUT APA CITATIONS in the Opening Paragraph! Conclusion paragraph (make it general): must 4 or more sentences Start the first sentence by referring to the thesis again and then wrap up your information. NEVER introduce something new that was not mentioned yet in the essay. *NOTE-never use phrases like "I am going to write about..." OR "As you can see I wrote about..." NEVER give personal opinions unless instructed to do so. PUT TWO REFERENCES AT THE END- do not just give a web address only! The Enlightenment was a period of time which thinkers thought critically about politics, religion, economics, and social issues that would liberate people and give them many freedoms. The Enlightenment took place in the 1700's to the 1800's. It began in Europe then spread to the United States. There are two Enlightenment thinkers-Voltaire and Mary Wollstonecraft, and they ci have had a great influence on the United States. V Voltaire was a French political thinker whose ideas helped shaped the freedom we enjoy in the United States today. When you speak you have the right to say whatever you would like. This is because of Voltaire. He wrote a book called Candide which was banned because most people thought he had abused freedom of expression with the many negative things he said about the government and organized religion (Andrews 2013). In America you also have freedom of religion. If your parents are Christian and you do not like that you have the right to convert to whatever you want. This is also because of Voltaire. He opposed organized religion, especially since the Catholic Church was dominant in France. In addition, he believed that everyone should be able to choose their religion. Later on the founding fathers took both of these ideas and applied them to the United States. Mary Wollstonecraft was a British women political figure who gave the United States the concept of women's rights. The United States is fortunate to have laws protecting women's freedoms. Although we still struggle with sexism throughout this country, it is not as severe as other countries. Wollstonecraft claimed that women were equal to men in every way except physical strength. Everyone rejected her reasons until American lawmakers applied the concept of treating everyone fairly in the United States.
