Drug Abuse in the United States
Over the decade's drug abuse has been a recurrent theme of social and political
commentary in the United States. Apparently, drug abuse is a problem that calls for a serious and
quick inquiry on its causes and investing in the social efforts to contain it. The most significant
issue is the mobilization of para-medical and medical resources to treat its victims (The United
States Commission on Marihuana & Drug Abuse, 1973).
Review of Literature
Compton, Thomas, Stinson, & Grant, (2007) focuses on the current and comprehensive
data on the epidemiology of DSM-IV 12-month and generational drug abuse in the United
States. The main objectives of the article by Compton and colleagues are that it shows data on
drug dependence and abuse prevalence and correlation with other Axis I and II disorders. From
the interviews participation, the prevalent 12-month and lifetime abuse of drugs was 1.4 % and
7.7% exceeding drug dependence rates that were 0.6% and 2.6% respectively (Compton et.al,
2007).
Compton & Volkow (2006)’s article looks at the problem of addiction to opioid
analgesics and addiction emerging as a major issue for the United States. The authors argue that
the issue continues to worsen over the decade and past years. Based on the article, abuse of
opioids appears to reflect partly the changing medical prescription practices and formulations as
well as relative accessibility via the internet (Compton & Volkow, 2006).
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2011) explores the vital signs of
overdose deaths, which involve opioid pain relievers (OPR) or rather opioid analgesics that
continue to increase and exceed cocaine and heroin deaths combined. The report gives the state’s

use and abuse of the OPR. Methods of the research include analysis of CDC rates of fatal OPR
overdoses, sales nonmedical use and treatment admissions (CDC, 2011).
According to Cooper, (2002), cocaine is considered one of the elite’s drugs perceived to
be safe and for the wealthy. The drug crack is said to be cocaine-free and produced easily and
safely. Essentially, it cocaine crack is synonymous with crime and violence. Analyses provided
in this book are crucial to the understanding of major issues on the safety of the society.
Kozel & Adams (1996) analyzes the patterns and trends in cocaine use among the young and
adult Americans. The book reflects on the abuse and delivery systems concerning the drug abuse.
Kozel & Adams (1996) also provides the treatment perceptions and options.
Spillane, (2000) book focuses on the anesthetic value of cocaine and the popularity of the
drug as well as abuse. Additionally, the author looks at the ban of the drug and consumer interest
in the illegal trade of the drug. Arguing on the underground origins and culture of the drug helps
in raising questions concerning drug policy today (Spillane, 2000).
Acker & Tracy (2004) looks at the historical use and consciousness of drug consumption
in America. From tobacco to alcohol the book gives the reader the range of the pervading culture
of drug use. Along with the historical perspective of drug use, the author writes about drug
disorders in children and adults such as the Hyperactivity disorder and bulking up in athletes
(Acker & Tracy, 2004).
Higgins & Katz (1998) focus on cocaine abuse causing major health problems and
contributing to most of the disturbing social menace such as neonatal drug exposure, violence,
and rime. This volume offers importance of a scientific approach and using conceptual
frameworks to address the situation of drug abuse. The blend of the critical review explicitly
focuses particularly on drugs in general.
