I am reading the book "The path between the Seas" about the Panama Canal.  I know General Electric supplied most of the electric motors and GE started out as a company that built DC motors.  Can you give me some resources to read about the conversion from AC to DC?

I am planning to take a cruise to the Panama Canal in 2016
