MENKAURE AND KHAMERENEBTY
The statue of Menkaure and Khaemerenebty was originally found in the Egyptian
pyramids among the sphinx. Menkaure was an Egyptian King believed to have been a ruler of
the fourth dynasty of the Egyptian rule. He was the successor of King Kafre. Khaemerenebty
was married to king Menkaure, and their statue has been preserved to this day as an
archeological artifact. The figure of Menkaure and Khaemerenebty are attached to a block of
stone where they have their carving from. Menkaure is the figure on the left while his wife
Khaemerenebty is on the right (Friedman). Menkaure’s position is a stance position as his arms
are well positioned, facing down with clenched fists, forward thumbs and the right foot placed in
front of the left foot.
The Menkaure pose is famous in the Egyptian type of art and has elucidated interests in
the many Egyptian artists who are involved in art. Menkaure’s wife is seen to stand in a different
position with distinctive differences like how her right-hand wraps around the pharaohs’ back.
Her other hand is then placed on Menkaure’s left arm. The motive behind this type of art is to
show the state of marriage and the relationship between Menkaure and Khaemerenebty. Other
than the hands, the couple does not show any other emotion of affection or romance; they do not
even look at each other (The Giza Archives). The statue is said to be carved between the period
of 2548 and 2530 BCE in the ancient Egypt.
