Introduction
Any analysis of America's many alternative religious movements must begin with a
series of observations on the various names used to describe them over the years. "Sect," which
comes from the Latin verb sequor, "to follow or attend to," is perhaps the most obvious of the
several titles used. Persons or organizations following a specific leader or adhering to unique
ideas have traditionally been characterized as religious sects. Sociologists and historians who
have researched alternative religious movements in American history have tried to pinpoint the
key characteristics that distinguish them from other religious organizations. As a result of this
effort, some adjectives have taken on a substantive nature, and new terminology has been
attached to such movement (Stein, 2012). This paper focuses on the characteristics of selected
alternative religions, and a comparison of the alternative religions with traditional Western
religions is also discussed.
