Module 22 - Hypothesis Test for a Population Mean Lab (13 of 19 discussion 1)PromptThe drinks datafile is available in the Data section below.Let μ be the mean number of alcoholic beverages that students in the liberal arts college drink in a typical week. State the hypotheses. Here is a histogram of the data. Can we safely use the t-test with this data? Explain.Perform the t-test using StatCrunch. Grossmont College David Merrell Rats Used for Treatment Groups Discussion
Context
A high school student named David Merrell did an experiment to examine if music affects the ability of rats to run a maze. The explanatory variable was exposure to music. He had three treatment groups: one group listened to heavy metal music by the group Anthrax. A second group listened to Mozart. The third group never heard music. This last group is the control group.
The response variable was the average time (in seconds) to complete three runs. Every week the rats ran the maze three times. Merrell recorded each rat's average time for the week.
Direct controls of potential confounding variables:
Merrell trained all of the rats to run the same maze.
He gave all mice the same amount of food and light.
All mice had the same approximate age and weights.
During the treatment phase, the rats were exposed to the treatment for the same amount of time, e.g. rats heard music at 70 decibels for 10 hours a day for a month.
Results:
By the end of the month the Anthrax group was much slower at running the maze. The Mozart group was much faster. The dotplots below show average run times for the first and last week of the experiment. Each dot represents one rat. The X-value is the rat’s average run time for the week. (Each rat ran the maze 3 times each week.) The blue line is the mean run time for each treatment group.
If you are curious, here is a video of Merrell explaining his experiment.

Prompt
Merrell claims that he randomly assigned rats to treatment groups. Does the data shown in the dotplots above support his claim? Why or why not?

Week 5 AssignmentQuestion 1In a poll of 725 voters in a campaign to eliminate non-returnable beverage containers, 510 of the voters were opposed. Develop a 95% confidence interval estimate for the proportion of all the voters who opposed the container control bill.Question 2A random sample of 25 airline pilots had an average yearly income of $101,600 with a sample standard deviation of $10,000.If we want to determine a 99% confidence interval for the average yearly income, what is the value of t?What wording in the prompt tells us to use t instead of z?Develop a 99% confidence interval for the average yearly income of all pilots.Question 3In order to determine the average weight of carry-on luggage by passengers in airplanes, a sample of 425 pieces of carry-on luggage was collected and weighed. The average weight was 17 pounds. Assume that we know the standard deviation of the population to be 2.75 pounds.Determine a 90% confidence interval estimate for the mean weight of the carry-on luggage. What wording in the prompt gave away the type of test (z or t) that this should be?Question 4A statistician employed by a consumer testing organization reports that at 90% confidence he has determined that the true average content of the Uncola soft drinks is between 11.8 to 12.2 ounces. He further reports that his sample revealed an average content of 12 ounces, but he forgot to report the size of the sample he had selected. Assuming the standard deviation of the population is 0.72, determine the size of the sample.Hint from Dr. Klotz: Have you visited this week's Notations and Symbols to align the formulas with these problems?
