Purpose: To analyze the function of “Point of View” (First-Person, Second-Person and Third Person) in the narratives of 2 distinct authors from 2 time periods.

Prompt: Compare and contrast the use of “Point of View” by examining “Learning to Read” by Fredrick Douglass and “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzaldua. Your analysis should answer: How does the First Person Point of View impact Douglass and Anzaldua’s argument.

Food for thought: Both authors use the first person point of view but each one has a different impact on the reader/s and/or intended audiences. What is it?

You may use 1st person point of view in your introduction to set up your interpretation of the texts. For example, if you have a hard time using first person point of view yourself, you may begin your essay by explaining why and the impact it may have on your writing and then transition to the close reading and analysis of the two texts.

Introduction

In my understanding, the article on “Learning to Read" by Fredrick Douglas talks
about what he went through and the tactics he used to be able to read and write. From the
article, I understood that in those days it was not allowed for the slaves to be educated as well
as to learn how to read and write. Fredrick thus had to use clever ways to be able to learn how
to read and write. After reading the article, I also know what Fredrick thought were the
disadvantages of being enlightened as opposed to remaining in the dark like his other mates.
In the article “How to tame a wild tongue” by Gloria Anzaldua, I interpreted that she was
defending her ethnicity using her tongue or rather a language. I understood that she valued
her language and was of the view that if anyone wants to hurt her, they should abuse her
language. I could also see the difficulties she went through to fit in as was required by her
superiors especially in terms of accent and introducing Chicanos to the students. I could also
see the importance of one’s native language as a determiner of our identity and what we stand
for.

who taught him how to read. These boys al...
