George and Jane had 42 book altogether. When George gave 4 books to Jane, Jane had 5 times as many books as George, How many books did George have at first.

Answer:

Let us take 

George's total no of books      =    x

Jane's total no of books          =    y

Thare fore the total no of books  =  x  +  y

                                                    =  42 

             George's books    x      =  42 - y

No of books George gave to jane   =  4

Therefore the remaining books with George  =  x - 4  =  (42 - y) -4

Now Jane's new total books   = 5 times of George's books

                                                 = 5 (x - 4)

                                                =  5x - 20

                                    5x       =   20  

x  =  20/5

x  =  4
