Written Exam 3: Methods and Results GOAL: Describe the methods used to collect the data. Analyze (using SPSS) and write up results based on the variables and hypothesis you proposed. Instructions: 1. Review the research paper provided as well as the analysis lectures in the course site to see how your methods and results should be reported. 2. Use the following as background information to help introduce your methods section: 180 students (between SOC 390 and SOC 391/FAS 361) were sent the class survey and asked to complete it anonymously as an online survey. While submitting the survey was a class assignment, responses to individual survey questions were completely voluntary. The survey consisted of 29 items, although you are focusing on a limited number of those items. 3. Review Data Analysis Steps and Data Analysis Techniques in the course site for assistance on how to run your variables in SPSS. Analyze your variables according to the correct statistical test using SPSS. 4. Write your Methods section which should include the following: ➢ Participants and Procedures: ▪ How was data collected? (voluntary? online? anonymously?) ▪ How many students completed the survey? (see the SPSS data file - how many rows of data are there?) ▪ How many men vs. women participated? ▪ What was the average age of the sample? (report standard deviations with averages - you can see how to report statistics under Data Analysis Techniques > Descriptive Statistics) ▪ What was the age range (i.e., what was the low age? high age?) ▪ What was the ethnicity breakdown for participants? ➢ Materials: ▪ Describe the survey – how many questions were on it? Were they open-ended or close-ended questions? ▪ Note that a question that asks for a number (such as number of times a student smiled in the last week) is NOT an open ended question – it is simply a numeric/continuous question (answer options are limited to numbers only). ▪ How many questions did your analysis focus on? Which variables did you focus on? As you discuss variables, use real names/descriptions of the variables – not the variable names in the data set. For example, if discussing alcohol use (called drinks_typical in SPSS), you can call it alcohol use in your paper rather than the variable name drinks_typical (this is more readable and clear to the reader). ▪ For your variables of focus (other than age and gender, as these are pretty basic/obvious), how were they measured? What did the question ask for? What were the response options? ➢ Analysis: ▪ What was/is your analysis plan? Write this in past tense! Describe in general terms how you analyzed your data (did you use ANOVA? T-tests?). What ▪ technique was used for each of your research questions? You will provide more details in the results section, but give the reader an overview of your analysis techniques. Avoid using I and My. Instead, a more passive voice may be appropriate since the focus is on the analysis technique. For example, instead of: I used regression to see if age predicts happiness; you might say: Regression was used to determine whether or not age predicts happiness. 5. Write your Results section providing descriptive statistics/information for your variables (other than age, gender, and ethnicity, which were described above).Report the findings of your main analyses using APA format. Again, see research paper for assistance on how to format your results section. 6. Make sure to include the following sections with your Methods and Results: • • • • Title page - This page simply provides the title of your proposal, authors, and university affiliation. You do not need any author’s note as indicated on the sample. Make sure your title page is in APA format with correct font and capitalization for running head, as well as spacing and centering for title, authors, and university affiliation. See https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for example and formatting procedure. Methods Section Results Section Your references page(s) – This is already part of your literature review. Make sure to revise them from the feedback provided.

Methods
Participants and procedures: A survey has been carried out in order to determine different
demographic and psychographic characteristics of the online students. The online survey was
initially handled to all the 180 students of the SOC 390 and SOC 391/FAS 361 classes of the
University of xxxx. Despite the fact that students were asked to compile the survey as part of
their class assignments, only 166 students filled the survey on time, including 47 males and 119
females. The average age of the students participating in the online survey was of 24.6 years
(S.D. 6.3) years and the age ranged from 18 to 52, being the range of 34 years. The ethnicity
breakdown of the students participating in the survey indicated a majority of White, Caucasian,
European (65.1%), which minority groups formed by Hispanic or Latino (10.8%), Black or
African American (10.2%), Asian or Asian American (4.8%), American Indian (1.8%). The
remaining 7.2% had a mixed, with parents being from any of the above mentioned groups.
Materials: The online survey consisted of 29 close-ended questions and didn’t include any openended question. From them, the analysis carried out in the present report focuses on four
different questions, aimed at evaluating the GPA score of the participants in the survey, the
number of average hours spent on a weekly basis for the study of a typical class, the average
hours spent watching the TV on a daily basis, and the number of alcoholic drinks consumed on a
daily basis. These four measurements were all based on a ratio scale of measurement, such that
only numerical answers were admitted. Additionally, in the case of the GPA score, the student
was requested to use two decimal places.

Analysis: The selected variables were initially analyzed to evaluate its descriptive statistics. In
this regard, characteristic statistics have been calculated such as the mean, the standard deviation,
the variance, the median, the mode or the range. Additionally, the relationship between the
different variables was analyzed through lineal regression models. For this purpose, three
different research questions have been proposed aiming at identifying the possible variables
affecting the GPA score of the student:
