Course Catalog Description CS 116 Introduction to Computer Science and their applications I• (3 cr) Study of fundamental concepts of computing: how computers work, what they can do, and how they can be used effectively. Topics covered: spreadsheets, word processing, databases, presentation software, multimedia/graphics software, program design and implementation, and fundamental computing theories. Three hours of lecture per week. Listed in the Texas Common Course Numbering System as COSC 1300. Course Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: 1. Recognize the role of computers in our technological society. 2. Describe a computer and its components. 3. Explain how computer components interact to assist and benefit the end user. 4. Interact with a computer by navigating the Windows XP operating system. 5. Resources and navigate the Internet using Internet Explorer. 6. Use application programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 7. Recognize basic macros with VBA 8. Develop an academic web-site in their TSU-Google-account 9. Lab assignments, random pop quizzes, projects, a Midterm exam, and a Final exam will be calculated using the following weighted scale: Course Grading Scale Topic Projects: 70% Pop-Quizzes 10% / Lab-work + homework 45% / class participation 10% 15% 15% Midterm Exam ( Chapter 1 and 2) Final Exam ( Chapter 3, 4, 5 ) (Check-course-schedule-weekly-assignments) Lab Assignments must done each week and the teacher will provide the instructions for the assignments during the lecture. Each time you read and study the chapter from your book. You need to complete a homework after each chapter throughout the term to develop the skills necessary to master the course objectives. Random Pop Quizzes ( Key-terms-from your book) will be given regularly throughout the semester. They will consist of essay definition questions that test your understanding of the subject matter.
