substance addiction, are developmentally impaired, or are sexually dangerous. Participants or
representatives contest committing an individual to mandatory intervention in most cases, as
in Addington vs Texas. In this lawsuit, the defendant challenged his indefinite commitment to a
Texas mental hospital owing to mental and emotional issues. The trial judge instructed the jury
to consider clear, unmistakable, and persuasive evidence to determine if the complainant was
mentally ill and needed hospitalization for his own or others’ protection. The jury ordered the
