The clear example is the house where Emily was living , it looked old- fashioned but Emily refused to do some changes because of traditions "...only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps-an eyesore among eyesores.''(1). The overall theme for this story is isolation, privacy and the conflict between past and change.Melanie Dean Discussion 5 "A Rose for Emily"William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily" takes place in the American South of Jefferson, Mississippi. The story is about a young girl named Emily Grierson who is sheltered from the world by her father Mr. Grierson. When her father passed away it took a huge toll on Emily. A gentleman by the name of Homer Barron visits Emily's house one day and she invites him in, little did he know that Emily was planning on poisoning him so she would never have to be alone again. When Homer died Emily placed his deceased body in the bedroom upstairs where his body would decompose. Her fathers corpse was also kept in her home. I do not believe there are supernatural characters present in the story, however Faulkner does refer this short story to a "ghost story" because Emily is not your average character since she keeps dead corpses in her home. Verbal irony happens when Emily insists she will not be paying taxes like the rest of the town because her father had an agreement with Colonel Sartoris when he was still alive that he would not have to pay taxes if he loaned the town money. I do believe there is a call for change in the South and I believe the theme would be fear of change. Emily had a hard time living a different life from the one she shared with her father, so when asked about her fathers passing she replied "her father was not dead" and kept that lie for 3 days until the law was going to get involved and she then Emily broke down. Emily didn't want things to change but in the end her fathers corpse was removed and a quick burial took place.

For three days this week, using a journal, record your own self-talk that you perceive as negative, dysfunctional, or problematic.
When recording your self-talk, be sure to include the circumstances in which these thoughts occurred and how they affected your feelings and behavior.

Two social factors to understand LGBTQ youth's contexts are discrimination and lack of laws/programs to protect LGBTQ in schools. LGBTQ youth face discrimination because of their "different" sexual orientation or identity. Also, bias stems from one's religious views impressed upon others. LGBTQ youth are bullied, victimized, and harassed at higher rates than those of the heterosexual population (Abreu & Kenny, 2017). Schools are a breeding ground of bullying towards LGBTQ youth due to the lack of awareness, age and maturity differences, social norms, and absence of programs. A psychosocial intervention to address one of the four specific psychosocial factors would be implementing laws and programs for LGBTQ youth. LGBTQ laws and programs would focus on decreasing bullying in person and online. Program resources provided to both populations' parents would create awareness of the LGBTQ community, anti-bullying techniques, and strategies. Abreu & Kenny (2017) stated that schools would implement cyberbullying courses into already existing bullying education and intervention programs. Teachers and facilities would integrate anti-bullying in their classes and be required to continue professional development. Schools should provide a safe and secure place for the LGTBQ youth to learn. An outcome to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of implementing laws and programs within schools could determine the number of reports made to faculty and staff of cyberbullying or face-to-face crimes. With the awareness and anti-bullying techniques and strategies in place, individuals would be aware of the signs to look for to stop harassment from developing. Another outcome could measure if the LGBTQ population has experienced a decrease in victimization, and if their experience with the programs is beneficial. This outcome would be conducted through anonymous surveys or guidance counselors. Using a psychosocial framework in social work with LGBTQ youth provides a practitioner with inclusive information about a specific population. A social worker must continue to learn new ways to work with various communities. Social services are ever-evolving and social workers need to be prepared to either adjust or grow along with the ever-evolving changes. A social worker must uphold the NASW code of ethics to provide a safe and secure environment for those in need.
