In overview, punishment is defined as an act of inflicting a consequence in form of pain
or penalty to someone due to their wrongdoings. In the past, an individual who offended in any
community was punished in an open physical environment purposely to warn others who thought
of attempting to do the same. Community members were responsible for punishing lawbreakers.
During ancient times, the criminal punishment was administered in form of flogging, public
humiliation, exile, branding as well as mutilation (Smith, 2007).
As time went by, more modern ways of punishment were brought based on nature of the
offence committed. The death penalty was put in place in the 17th Century in England. Many
other reforms of punishing lawbreakers followed which used deductive logic in solving the
problem in a humane way (Smith, 2007). Such advancement in punishing offenders offered a
