Description

I have started this but need help finishing.

Week 3 - Fluency Powerpoint
Create a PowerPoint presentation of 15-18 slides on effective fluency strategies.
Your presentation should cover the following topics at a minimum:
1. The role of fluency within the five critical elements of reading
2. Research-based teaching strategies for fluency
3. The impact of fluency on reading comprehension
4. Differentiation of fluency instruction for ELL, SPED, and diverse learners
5. Assessments for fluency
Title and reference slides are required. Use graphics and color schemes to make your presentation
attractive and visually stimulating. The presentation should be organized with headings, descriptions,
bullets, etc.
Submit slide notes, background materials, etc., to the instructor.
Additionally, include a summary or brochure that you could include with your presentation as a
supplemental handout if you were presenting it at a training or in-service. While there is no
specific word count, your summary or brochure must include all required assignment topics.
In-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be
found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a grading rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to
become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

Remember you should also create a brochure! Lots of students forget this and it is worth
a lot of points!

EFFECTIVE FLUENCY STRATEGY SubtitleDiane Tschopp EED 470 9/19/17 The Role of Fluency within the 5 Major Components of Literacy ▪ Phonics Awareness-“is the knowledge that words are made up of a combination of individual sounds.” ("National Reading Panel: Five Components of Reading Instruction Frequently Asked Questions," n.d.) ▪ Phonics- “the system of relationships between letters and sounds in a language.” (PBS Parents, 2017) ▪ Fluency- is “the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. (Reading Rockets, 2017) ▪ Vocabulary- words of a language. ▪ Comprehension- “is the complex cognitive process readers use to understand what they have read.” (Read Naturally, 2017) What is Fluency? ▪ “Fluency is the ability to read text with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. ▪ Fluency generally includes the following three components: ▪ 1. Accuracy, sometimes called automaticity; ▪ 2. Rate, or the speed a student reads; and ▪ 3. Prosody, or the ability to read with feeling.” (GCU, 2014) How is Fluency’s Connected to the Other Areas of Reading? Research Based Strategy for Improving Fluency #1 Model Fluent ReadingThe teacher can show how to read fluently by reading to the students. She shows how fluent reading sounds like. When reading make sure you express your voice in the way the text means it to sound like. After modeling it have the student reread the text. Have other adults, such as parents and anyone involved in the child’s life, do the same with the child. ("pictures of adults reading to children Google Search," n.d.) Research Based Strategy for Improving Fluency #1 Continued Choral ReadingWhen choral reading the teacher gives a copy of the text they are about to read to each student. The students read along with the teacher as they read the text. Make sure you pick a book hat is at their level and not to long. You first read the book outload to the students to model the fluency then ask the students to join along with you as you read it together. You should do this three to four times. By that time the students should be able to read it independently. ("pictures of teachers and children reading together in a class - Google Search," n.d.) Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read text with speed, accuracy, and proper expression
The connection fluency has to other Areas of Reading
Fluency is connected to other areas of reading in several ways. Among them we have the
connection it has to Phonemic Awareness. Fluency improves student Phonemic awareness since
they will be able to manipulate the phonemes if they are fluent readers easily. Secondly, fluency
is connected to vocabulary development. This is so since for one to be fluent, he /she ought to
know a lot of vocabulary. Lastly, fluency is connected to phonics which is basically how letters
are related to one another. This implies that affluent reader is capable of combining letters
effectively (Honig, n.d.).
Research Based Strategy for Improving Fluency

Model Fluent Reading where the teacher can show how to read fluently by

reading to the students.

Choral reading where the teacher gives a copy of the text they are about to read to

each student & the students read along with the teacher as they read the text.

Tape-assisted where one reads a book as they listen to an audio tape of a fluent

Student-adult reading which entails a student reading one-on-one with the adult.

Partner reading where students are paired & they take turns reading to one another

Readers' theatre where students rehearse & perform a given play in front of their

reader.

What Teachers Can Do to Support Fluency Development for EL/SPED Populations

Utilize word walls to promote word awareness

Teachers can incorporate the use of real life examples when teaching to enable

students to repeat certain words whenever they encounter situations taught in class in their real
life.
Ways to Assess Fluency

Public speaking where expression & phrasing of words as well as the speed of

speaking are assessed.

Reading where assessment of fluency is carried out by determining the attention

paid while decoding words
