The plates are always in motion due to the currents of the oceanic plates as well as the minuscule movement of rocks under the crust. The lithosphere is where the plates reside and right underneath is where the asthenosphere is. This layer is where molten rock is. The plates float on these molten rock So the heat and radiation that produces energy from the molten rocks and provide movement contstantly for the plates.
