The Affordable Care Act incorporates various consumer protection specifically
designed to improve the accessibility, affordability, and adequacy of the private health
insurance (Keith, Lucia, & Corlette, 2013). Since states are the primary regulators of the
health insurance, issues were raised examining new state actions on a subset of protection.
Examples of these subsets include guaranteed access to medical coverage and a ban on the
already existing conditions exclusions that were affected in 2014.
Recent analysis reviled that only a few states have passed the new laws concerning
the protections or issued a new regulation on at least one protection. Additionally, the
findings revealed that without new legislation, some of the states might face limitations in
fully enforcing the reforms. The findings suggest an acute need for the states to take
immediate action to help ensure that consumers are not only fully protected by but also
