If I drive past a train going 49 miles per hour and the train is going towards me at 15 mph and the train is measured at. 9 miles in length by the cars odometer , how long is the train.

Since the odometer measured 9 miles, then the car traveled for 9/49 = 0.1837 hours since time = distance/speed

But the combined speed of the car and train is 49 + 15 = 64 mph

So the length of the train must be 64 x 0.1837 = 11.76 miles long
