It can be local, regional, or national. Provide the following elements:

- Why you selected this individual as a figure that needed profiled in the history of education.

Mary McLeod Bethune
Biography
Mary Mcleod Bethune was born on July 10th, 1875, in Maysville, South Carolina. She
was the seventeenth child, and her parents and siblings had been enslaved before the Civil War.
Mary used to work in cotton fields as she balanced with school work. She was able to earn a
scholarship to Scotia Seminary in North Carolina in 1888 ("Top Ten Most Influential Women in
American Education," 2019). She had a goal of completing missionary work in Africa, where she
continued her studies even after graduating in 1893. Mary ended up being a teacher since most
churches only sent white missionaries. As she continued her teaching career, she met Albertus
Bethune, a fellow teacher. The two got married in 1898, and one year later, they were blessed
with a son, Albert.
The family later moved to Daytona, Florida, despite the common Ku Klux Klan. Mary,
however, saw an opportunity to spread education and empower black women to break the cycle
of poverty and dependence on the racist system ...
