Identify cultures that favor direct eye contact and those that avoid eye contact. Give
examples to show how olfactics is an important aspect of intercultural nonverbal
communication
Most Western cultures favor the use of eye contact during conversations. For instance, in
the U.S. and Europe direct eye contact is viewed as a sign of respect and attentiveness. A
person's confidence or strength is many times judged by how comfortable they are with
maintaining direct eye contact (Martin, & Chaney, 2008). However, prolonged direct eye contact
is discouraged because it is interpreted as aggressiveness. Arabic cultures encourage prolonged
eye contact as it indicates respect. Additionally, they judge a person's truthfulness by how they
maintain direct eye contact. Conversely, other cultures including the Japanese, Africans, and
Latin Americans view direct eye contact as disrespectful and rude.
Olfactics is the study of smell as a non-verbal form of communication. People
subconsciously choose who life mates or who to communicate with based on the sense of smell.
In Western cultures, people view some natural smells as offensive and unattractive, and thus they
cover them with artificial odors like perfumes. Arabic cultures see natural body odors as normal
while some Asian cultures including Indonesians and Indians view natural smells as offensive
and emphasize frequent bathing.
