The theory of superposition states that the older something is in terms of rocks, soil, and any forms of solids on Earth, the deeper it is which lays under younger materials. Since applying this, it would tell us that the younger surface of the Earth would be on top, while the older surface, such as rocks on the mantle would be underneath. The process of dating by looking at the superposition and the relationship of these layers is called stratigraphy.
