Young requested to be absent from work for two days so he could attend a church
convention. His boss passed along the request, but failed to note that it was for a
religious purpose, so the request was turned down. Young then sent another
request, but it was rejected too. He went to the convention anyway. When he
returned, he was suspended for ten days for having left without permission. He
protested that the suspension was harsher than other employees were given for
similar infractions and said he would file a complaint. He was fired.
Requirement:
Postings to discussion board questions should use the following format:
Analysis - present the legal arguments related to the question. This should be very thorough.
Management tips - provide management with advice on how to correct the current situation
and/or how to prevent such a situation in the future
References - at least two per answer. Wikipedia and my class notes are not acceptable
references.
Please clearly label each section.
To assist you in developing complete postings to lesson questions, the following tips should be
followed.
The analysis and management tips should be provided for all questions posted for each lesson.
Your analysis should illustrate your understanding of the material covered and should be very
detailed. Management tips should be provided to inform management of how to correct the
situation presented or how to prevent it in the future. Please clearly label each section when
posting.
Remember to include at least two references in each analysis. References can include your text
book, but it must also include an outside source such as another book, article, or court case.
Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. Resources are available through the University
Library. Please make sure to cite outside sources sufficiently for me to locate. I recommend using
APA format.
An example of various APA reference formats are as follows:
Court Case: Knight v. Alabama, 787 F. Supp. 1030 (1991).
Magazine Article: Kulis, S., Chong, Y., & Shaw, H. (1999). Discriminatory organizational contexts
and black scientists on postsecondary faculties. Research in Higher Education, 40(2), 115-148.
Book: Heneman, H.G., III, & Judge, T.A. (2006). Staffing organizations (5th ed.). New York:
McGraw-Hill/Irwin.
The online databases made available through the University Library are a great resource.
Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw are great resources for court cases while Academic Search Premier is
very good for full-length articles. To provide a better understanding of my grading policies, a
grading matrix has been posted under the Syllabus link. Please refer to the grading matrix for
information on lesson posting deductions.
