Introduction
The origin of racial discrimination among blacks in the United States can be traced back
to the early 17th century. This was the period when the American economy had begun to expand
and grow rapidly; hence there was a high need for cheap labor. Most of the laborers in farms and
industries, especially during the 18th century, were slaves who were mainly acquired from
Africa. Even though the import of slaves was abolished in the 18th century, the number of
enslaved people in the United States tripled by the mid-19th century (Bleich, Findling, Casey,
Blendon, Benson, SteelFisher, & Miller, 2019). These African-Americans underwent severe
racial, religious, social, political, and economic discrimination, which is still experienced now.
Racial discrimination is a crucial and prominent matter in America among Blacks because it has
significant effects on their well-being and health. Being one of the largest minority groups in the
United States, the African Americans or the Blacks have a crucial role to play in matters of
equity.
Progress of the Black Discrimination in the US
Discrimination against African Americans or Blacks in the United States contradicts the
core values of equity and fairness in offering opportunities and how people are treated. This
discrimination also causes severe health consequences, and this is explained by the large
proportion between White and black health gap. Regardless, a lot of efforts and struggles have
been undertaken mainly in the past fifty years, and positive results have gradually been recorded.
A half-century ago, most African Americans were heavily trapped in poverty and did not have
the opportunity to reside in inner cities. African Americans have historically been the victim of
institutional and interpersonal racial discrimination. According to Bleich et al. (2019),
institutional racism includes the development of policies, institutions, and practices that impose

barriers to access to various opportunities and increase racial disparities, which include education
and residential segregation. On the other hand, interpersonal racial discrimination is described as
direct and inappropriate discrimination, especially during interactions between people like racial
micro-aggressions and slurs. These discriminations have significant mental and physical health
leading to diseases such as hypertension, anxiety, depression, and psychological distress.
Prior 1940s, only about 5% of Blacks in the United States were employed in non-manual
or white-collar jobs. Most of the Blacks worked in insecure, ill-paid, and manual jobs that were
carried out by very few Whites. Most African American women worked as house helps or
servants where they worked more than twelve hours a day for low wages. Significant
demographic and economic changes began to happen in the mid-1940s. These changes were
accompanied by a shift in White racial attitudes, and the Blacks began the long road to racial
equality and fought against any form of racial discrimination. However, real changes, especially
in how African Americans labored, were experienced after the 1960s (Bleich et al., 2019).
