Whatdid the battle of Isandhlwana, career of the Mahdi in Sudan or the success ofMenelik II against Italy suggest about the limits of non-White peoples’capacity to truly triumph over even arrogantly careless European states?
Menelik II achieved victory over Italy during his rule of Ethiopia. His success proved that it is important to be aware of your own strengths and to persevere. He was able to expand his empire while disproving the arrogant European states' over confidence. His victory made him, as a ruler, and his empire recognized and respected. He surprised the European states by using slavery and modern political and economic methods to expand his empire. Two ideas that were associated with the European empire during that time. Using these ideas not only helped him keep expand his empire, but empowered him to defend his people against Italy's attacks and kept his country independent.
