Research Poster
60 Points, 30% of Final Grade
You are charged with conducting a content analysis and reporting your findings in the format of a research
poster. First, you will devise a research question. Second, you will systematically collect a sample of text from
6 newspaper articles utilizing a purposive sampling design. Third, you will code the data in three steps: 1) open
coding, 2) devise a coding guide, 3) re-code utilizing your coding guide. Third, you will produce a paper and
associated research poster that summarizes your project. It should be written in academic tone and include
the following:
Title
Student Name
Introduction (.5 pages)
Hook the reader with warrant(s) for your project. Present your topic, research question, and hypotheses.
Summarize the findings and argument explaining why you found what you did.
Methods (1 page)
Explain nature of your population and data, your sampling strategy, how you analyzed the data, examples of
the codes that emerged from initial and focused coding, the strengths and limitations of your analysis to answer
your research question, and any ethical issues you encountered.
Findings (1-2 pages)
Present a summary of your key findings that relate to your research question. Integrate examples from your
coded data from your analysis to support your findings (i.e. statistics, quotes)
Discussion & Conclusion (.5-1 page)
Synthesize and tie up loose ends. Review the key findings as they relate to the initial framing of the paper and
the argument presented in the introduction. Develop a conclusion that reiterates the importance of your
research, while leaving the reader with something to ponder. Spend one paragraph presenting at least two
ideas for future research. Spend at least one paragraph discussing broader societal implications and/or ideas
for reform or ways to address the issue addressed in your project.
References (½ page)
Present any citations in ASA format. It is optional to include references.
**You will submit your paper and poster electronically to profdingeman@gmail.com by the deadline
**You will also submit hard copies of your newspaper articles & coding notes. If these are not included you will
receive a full grade deduction (i.e. an A goes down to B)

Qualitative Assessment
The score of the paper can be increased or decreased based on the instructor’s qualitative, holistic, and subjective
evaluation of the poster and any extenuating circumstances. It may be reduced for being late, too short/long,
unrelated to the prompt, missing data and coding notes, etc. It may be increased if the student went beyond
expectations, performed particularly well in certain areas, etc. COMMENTS:
