High school and college is the time when teenagers and young adults interact with others
to gain life experience. This is the stage where young adults transition to adulthood. However,
this stage could be tricky and challenging for most teenagers and adolescents due to peer
pressure. They could find themselves indulging in bad behaviors. For instance, drug and alcohol
abuse begins at the early stages of life for young adults. They tend to interact with their peers and
they could explore different substances such as alcohol and drugs. There are more than 12
million college students in the United States indicating that peer pressure and indulgence in
alcohol and drug abuse begin (Welsh, Shentu, & Sarvey, 2019). One in five youths in colleges
has tasted alcohol or any other drug in school parties or other instances. This indicates that there
is a high percentage of youths in college that have alcohol and drug abuse issues. Substance
abuse is more prevalent in schools and there is a need to implement evidence-based interventions
to curb the problem. Social workers in school administration have the mandate to introduce
measures and strategies that would improve college lifestyles to eliminate substance abuse. The
research focuses on the evaluation of substance abuse in schools, implementing evidence-based
interventions, and designing plans to improve the students’ lifestyles.
Description of the Substance Abuse in Schools
Drug and substance abuse in high schools and colleges is highly prevalent in most parts
of the world. The education system has recorded that nearly 50% of youths in senior years have
already tried illicit drugs of any type. Some of the most commonly used drugs in schools include
bhang, cigarettes, and alcohol. Also, nearly 66% of college students have indulged in alcohol and
other substances (Welsh, Shentu, & Sarvey, 2019). This is mainly caused by peer pressure and

influence from others. In most instances, teenagers and adolescents hold parties in schools which
most of them contain bhang and alcohol. However, the problem can escalate to be severe which
would lead to drug and substance dependence and abuse. For instance, some of the drug abusers
and substance addicts in colleges and communities started with simple drinking habits. This habit
grows and becomes an addiction that presents adverse impacts on teenagers' and young adults’
Current Research Findings Concerning Drug and Substance Abuse in Schools
College and learning institutions have invented programs that evaluate drug and alcohol
addiction prevalence in modern communities. For instance, the Center on Addiction Institution
claims that more than 60% of college students in the communities attend learning institutions
that are already “drug infected” which reflects the high chances that teenagers are likely to
indulge in alcohol and substance abuse at some point in their college lives (Lipari & JeanFrancois, 2016). Apart from the common drugs – bhang and alcohol – opium has been
commonly used in most colleges and high schools. In some regions, non-medical opioid and
heroin abuse are highly prevalent among senior high school students and college students. This is
a major problem that has contributed to the issues affecting students and that has been caused by
alcohol and drug abuse in educational institutions. For instance, the National Institute on Drug
Abuse (NIDA) recorded that nearly 1000 students in some regions have used heroin while 77%
of the senior students have abused prescription opioid drugs (Lipari & Jean-Francois, 2016).
