In healthcare, the only constant thing is change. Change in the healthcare field is
occurring rapidly due to increasing demand for healthcare services, advancements in
medicine, and technology. In addition, new models of care such as patient-centered and
quality improvement approaches are driving change in the healthcare industry. Currently,
many healthcare organizations are on the move toward the adoption of electronic health
records (EHR) with the aim of achieving Meaningful Use. This makes the current times
stressful for providers and healthcare staff as their way of life and practices keep on
changing.
The document “Change Management in EHR Implementation” provides crucial
insights on health IT implementation. It provides healthcare providers and IT staff with a
framework for managing EHR implementation based on John Kottler’s organizational change
insights (NLC, 2013a). For instance, the document provides a foundation for the various
phases of implementing EHR to help organizations achieve practice transformation and EHR
Meaningful use. In my view, I agree with Kottler’s argument that change management
strategies and methodologies should be integrated into the various implementation phases
(NLC, 2013a). In addition, I understand that change has various emotional and psychological
aspects that change implementers must think about before implementing the change to ensure
the change accommodates all involved stakeholders.
The three crucial change management phases, as proposed by Kottler, include the
creating a change climate phase, the engagement and organizational enabling phase, and the
final phase that involves implementing and sustaining change. In the first phase of creating a
change climate, Kottler argues that the change implementers must establish the need for
change by creating a sense of urgency. This involves creating the desire to change the status
quo and improve the current practice toward a better future state. I have understood that the
change implementers must also create a coalition with other like-minded stakeholders by
identifying champions for the change initiative to help lead in the process. This includes a
guiding team who fully understands the vision of the proposed change and is ready to sell it
