Team Dynamics: An Overview
The characteristics and outcomes of collaborative teams
Teams comprise a group of individuals with similar or different competencies working
collectively to achieve a common goal. The team's productivity hinges on the collaboration and
cooperation of all team members (Gaffney, 2015). Each member must contribute and fully
devote themselves to achieving the desired outcome without reservations for the collective
outcome to exceed what would be attained if the individuals worked individually. Bringing
together persons with homogenous or heterogeneous skills and competencies does not guarantee
higher productivity. A collaborative team must be motivated. Berlin (2014) posits that
productivity in a team can be optimized through intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The
management must identify and leverage a common incentive that inspires the team members to
harmonize their efforts to achieve the desired outcome. Besides, motivation fosters engagement,
morale, and team cohesion, enabling members to sacrifice self-interests to pursue collective
interests.
Communication is the lifeblood of a collaborative team. A collaborative team must
embrace effective communication practices allowing the members to contribute and discuss
different approaches to achieve the set goal. Effective communication allows the team members
to nurture joint intention, create a common ground, and bolster team awareness (Gervits et al.,
2016). Each of these elements has a pivotal role in the team's productivity. Joint intention, for
example, drives the members to align their efforts towards a common purpose. Team awareness
creates an opportunity to inform the members of their responsibilities in actualizing the joint
intention. A collaborative team must maintain open communication channels to allow dialogue
to identify the most effective approach to executing the assigned mandate.
