A lifeguard spots a drowning swimmer 40 ft. from the shore and 120 ft. Down the shore.these two distances are perpendicular to each other. The lifeguard runs along parallel to the shore for 90 ft. at a speed of 15 feet per second and then swims straight to the swimmer at a speed of 5 feet per second. How long does it take the lifeguard to reach the swimmer?

Running parallel to the shore for 90ft at 15 ft/s takes

90/15 = 6 seconds

Then he swims diagonally along the hypotenuse of a 30-40-50 right triangle

50/5 = 10 seconds

So, the total time it takes him to reach the swimmer is 6 + 10 = 16 seconds
