A)KaBreisha Esters Psychoanalytic TheoryI think this theory is more relatable for me personally. I think that family dynamics is something thats passed on from generation to generation. With this theory, one would be able to possibly identify what influences the dynamic of the family to be what it is. However, I think this would be a challenge for me due to the fact that it may create a potential bias viewpoint for me. I could see myself being fixated on identifying “who” is making this dynamic what it is then focusing on “fixing” them in return. More like a problem solver and that isn’t my true job. I wouldn’t want anyone to feel alienated. Bowenian TheoryI think this theory is very interesting honestly. There are many in depth break offs that makes this a great option for my personal style of counseling as well. This would be more accessible with family dynamics compared to the psychoanalytic theory. I find this one less challenging due to the fact that there are a variety of options to reference when looking for the reasonings to family dynamics. I would enjoy picking concepts that relate to the client/family.Both theories are great options to the point I’d find it difficult to pick one over the other. I would refer to both when necessary for family dynamics because they have great support in research when finding ways to maneuver and intervene with family dynamics of future clients. Both theories are interesting and make me want to actually sit through a family session to see which theory I’d apply and why or if it would help me identify the client/family’s problem. B)Alyssa Plank Psychoanalytic TheoryPersonally, I prefer the psychoanalytic theory over Bowenian theory. Psychoanalytic theory focuses on individual treatment, especially focusing on the unconscious thoughts and exploring unresolved conflicts. In a family therapy setting, it focuses on understanding that individuals are focused on being accepted and cared for by their caregivers. In the psychoanalytic theory, conflict is said to result from past troubles. This is relatable to any individual that has suffered abuse in the past (Scott, 2021). Bowenian TheoryBowenian theory focuses on the family as a single unit that is emotionally attached. Psychological problems within the family are said to be derived from the family of origin. It is important to note that Bowenian therapy focuses both on togetherness and individuality within the family. Self differentiation, nuclear family processes, projection and triangulation are important parts of this theory. I think that this theory would be more difficult to present to clients as you are not focusing so much on the past, but are working to develop a singular individual within the family unit (Kim-Appel & Appel, 2021). C)Ashley Brewer How Does Music Impact MoodQuantitative Research In order to create a research design that is quantitative to answer this question, I have decided to look at the differences in mood between a control group and a comparison group. (Balkin, & Kleist, 2017). The control group will not listen to music while preforming a task (ex. complete a puzzle). The comparison group will listen to music when preforming the same task. The independent variable in this experiment is music and the dependent variable is measuring the construct of mood which will be assessed by Multidimensional Emotion Questionnaire (MEQ; Klonsky, et al., 2019). This assessment provides the experiment with quantitative data of both negative emotions (Sad, afraid, anxious, etc.) and positive emotions (happy, proud, inspired, etc.) which are scored on a 5-point scale. These scales can be totaled to see the difference between the pre-task assessment and post-task assessment for the control and comparison group. Results will indicate if playing music while completing a task increases or decreases mood more than completing a task without music. Qualitative ResearchUnlike a quantitative approach, qualitative methods don’t assign value to data to answer the research question but instead look to finding themes in more personal stories (Balkin, & Kleist, 2017). Participants aren’t randomly sampled, but rather participants are purposely selected for the knowledge that they hold on the subject. For a qualitative approach to this research question I would utilize a focus group where I would seek participants who report that music significantly impacts their mood. The focus group would be asked many open ended questions that allow for a dialogue of what types of music, how their mood is impacted, and many other informative questions (Laureate Education, 2017). I will then analyze the interviews and identify common themes which could lead to answering the research question.Better of the TwoBecause this research question is quite broad, I believe that qualitative methods would be most appropriate. If the question were more specific such as “does classical music increase the feeling of excitement in older US adults?”, quantitative methods would allow for deductive reasoning to answer this question (Balkin, & Kleist, 2017). However, the breadth of this question requires inductive reasoning which will allow researchers to gain better context and knowledge to answer the question. Qualitative methods also allow for better cultural considerations which are going to be very important for a research question involving music (Laureate Education, 2017). D)RE: Discussion - Week 6Quantitative research is described as useful when one is looking to examine the relationship between variables, groups, or even trends (Balkin & Kleist). Putting this information into the question how does music impact mood using quantitative research you can conduct a study that would have two groups. The groups would do a universal task such as cleaning. One group would be allowed to listen to music with this task and the other group would be doing the cleaning in silence. The consistent variable is the task of cleaning and the changing variable would be the use of music or silence. Quantitative research would be applied to assess the mood of the two groups after completing the task. Having a way to measure the mood of each participant would be conducted using a scale ranging from miserable to happy. This would provide the ability to measure accurately and consistently across the board.Qualitative ResearchQualitative research allows one to understand the meaning of events, situations, experiences, or actions of particular contexts. This suggests that qualitative research is used more for finding connections and not focusing on numerical data and values (Balkin & Kleist). Using the research question about how does music impact mood using qualitative research, this could be approached in a few ways. The way I would approach it would be more informal allowing the participants to express the connection to music and their mood. Creating a storyline allows them to integrate emotion, experiences, and connections to the music without placing a numerical number associated to it. Creating an open line of communication will allow the person to express how much impact music has on them and their mood. After having each person talk about there connection to music you can look for common themes and connections to provide sound similarities to the research question.Better of the TwoUsing the research question of how does music impact mood, I would suggest using quantitative research. This research technique allows for each person to rate how music impacts their mood. By providing a 1-5 type scale, you have distinct comparison where as qualitative you are more summarizing what you think the person meant. Since there are no values assigned in qualitative rather emotions and meaning, it leaves room for interpretation. Quantitative research is useful when examining relationships between variables, differences between groups, or identifying specific trends (Balkin & Kleist). Since the research question is looking for relationships between music and moods, I would say qualitative is better for the research.
