A small plane can travel 120mph in still air. The plane can fly 700 miles with the wind in the same time that it can travel 500 miles against the wind. Find the speed of the wind.

Nov 22nd, 2017

Let x be the speed of the wind.  So the plane speed with the wind is 120 +x and against the wind 120 -x.

Time required to fly 700 miles with the wind = 700/120 +x.  The time required to fly 500 miles against the wind = 500/120 -x.

Therefore the equation is:    700/120 +x  = 500/ 120-x

                                             700 (120 -x) = 500 (120 +x)

                                             84000-700 x = 60000x + 500 x

                                             24000 = 1200x

                                             x = 20 mph

Answer:  speed of wind 20 mph
