FYS 199.12 Due Date: Written Assignment #1 Wednesday October 4, 2017 Please address this topic in a carefully organized and proofread 3-4 page paper (12 point font, standard margins, double spaced) As the title of our seminar suggests, we will soon be exploring how humans have interacted with the natural environment and each other over the course of our 200,000 year existence as a species, as well as how both the planet and humans may ultimately respond to each other’s activities. It will be beneficial at this juncture to consider the relevance of our introductory readings to this more focused exploration. Edward O. Wilson, professor emeritus at Harvard University, is one the world’s most influential living scientists. He has won the Pulitzer Prize twice. We will be reading one of his book, The Future of Life, at the conclusion of this course. Here is a quote from this book: “The guiding principles of a united environmental movement must be, and eventually will be, chiefly long-term. If two hundred years of environmentalism have taught us anything, it is that a change of heart occurs when people look beyond themselves to others, and then to the rest of life. It is strengthened when they also expand their view of landscape, from parish to nation and beyond, and their sweep of time from their own life spans to multiple generations and finally to the extended future history of humankind.” (p. 155) Develop an argument, with the objective being to “change the hearts” of your readers in order to produce amongst them the type of “united, long-term environmental movement” that Wilson envisions. Use at least three of the texts from the list below to support your argument. Possible texts At least two from: The Humanities and Human Nature by Steven Pinker “Only Connect…”: The Goals of a Liberal Education by William Cronon “The Allegory of the Cave” (from The Republic) by Plato (translated by Bloom) “The Loss of the Creature” (from The Message in the Bottle) by Walker Percy You may also use one or more additional texts of your choosing.
