Assignment #2 The best academic paper ever. 30% It is important to learn how to write an academic essay and we will work over the semester to both learn how to write a good one. The essay will be written in APA style and will not exceed 2500 words. You any pick your topic from any of the ideas below. Marking scheme is below. Use the marking scheme to plan out your essay. I will take time in class to discuss proper research, references, and how to structure an essay. QUESTIONS: 1. Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault, discuss a recent discourse in mass media. Review the topics that discourses often relate to: politics, gender, geography, etc. Look at the 'enonces' used by different media outlets or quote from public officials that shape how the audience is supposed to make sense of the discourse. Discuss the power dynamics and historical precedents that shaped how we presently think about your chosen phenomenon. 2. Explore Erving Goffman's book The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life. When he wrote this book we observed people on the street. Exploring Facebook and Instagram, do Goffman's theories apply to the space of social media sites? What do you share online? What is TMI or over-sharing? 3. Using semiotic theory to analyse online communication trends like: emoji, memes, gifs, vines, hashtags, etc 4. Find a famous speech from history that we have not addressed in class. Using both semiotic analysis and analysis of rhetorical devices, deconstruct, analyze and argue why the famous speech either was massively successful or a massive failure. 5. Choose one book, film, TV show, or ad that had very mixed reactions for different publics when it was published. Using Stuart Hall's theory of encoding decoding and making reference to terms like ideology and discourse, examine why the text was interpreted in different ways by different audiences. 6. You are permitted to choose your own topic so long and you receive approval of your thesis and outline at least 3 weeks in advance of the paper due date. Question 3.
Törrönen, J. (2002). Semiotic theory on qualitative interviewing using stimulus texts. Qualitative
Research, 2(3), 343-362.
Semiotics theory is the study of signs and symbols, for the purpose of meaning-making. The study
primarily focuses on elements of language or other systems of communication. It is also important to
note that although the theory may seem to have similarity with Semiology, they are different in that
semiotics traditionally explores anthropological aspects. The main principle used is that meaning is
made by the deployment of commonly known acts and objects which function as "signs" in relation to
other signs. Systems of signs are constituted by the complex meaning-relations that can exist between
one sign and another.

The author speaks about three separate analytical strategies for selecting and

using stimulus texts in semiotic analytics. Different strategies normally imply different research designs,
interview protocols and criteria of analyzing the data. When we use stimulus texts as clues, we build the
interview experience so that the texts, together with the interview side inquiries. He also outlines the
usage of semiotic tools appropriately in the deconstruction of signs.
Craig, R. T. (1999). Communication theory as a field. Communication theory, 9(2), 119-161.
Today, with major technological advancements having been made in the communication industry,
semiotics plays even a much bigger role. With the continued rapid development of social networking
applications and sites, for the past two decades. The world has seen the rise of some trends, in regards
to online communication. These so-called trends can all be viewed from a symbolic perspective. Trends
like; emojis, memes, gifs, vines, hashtags amongst others all carry meanings and in this essay, I will
expound their relevance from a professional standpoint.
The book the author has discussed the various standpoints for studying communication since these
theories are mutually relevant when addressed to a practical real-world. He shows that no active field

inquiry has a fully unified theory. A perfectly coherent field would be seen as being too static but the
practice of communication is very much alive (Craig, 1999).

research. Journal of Consumer Research, 21(3), 461-...
