Human rights involve the right to live, the right to own properties or goods paid for, the
right to care for our children to the constitutional right to elect leaders if guaranteed in the
constitution. Thus, human rights can be generally understood as indifferent claims that are
independent of the promises of other parties. For instance, the right to life depends only on the fact
that people are humans and not the promise from another party not to kill you. However, the United
Nations (UN) defines human rights as inherent standards for all humans regardless of race,
ethnicity, sex, religion, nationality, or language (United Nations. 2022).
A brief history of human rights
The belief that humans have inherent rights can be traced through influential codes used
across cultures and traditions throughout history. During ancient history, certain oral and written
