Ancient Gender Norms Satire
In this play of Aristophanes Lysistrata has organized to meet women so that they can
discuss the way forward in ending Peloponnesian strife. Lysistrata is impatiently waiting for
women from Sparta and other critical areas so that they can come to give their views to end this
conflict that is dragging their cities. However, as Lysistrata waits he goes ahead to curse women
for being weak and selfish. Nevertheless, this is an overview of the play, but the focus is on how
the war has been satirized in the play using three episodes.
Episode 1
In this first episode, Lysistrata is encouraging women to go on sex strike. According to
Lysistrata, denying men sex would allow women to fast track their commitment to brokering a
