Movie Review Guidelines- The Downfall Specific Requirements: 1. The review must be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, default margins, STAPLED, and will be 3 pages in length. 2. Please make a title page that includes your name and the topic your review is on. The review is to be divided into 3 parts. Please follow this format EXACTLY: Label Section: Theme 1) What major historical theme, which we have discussed in class, is exemplified in this movie? To start this section, simply state the theme in one word. After that, give rationale, evidence, and historical argument to back up your choice. It is highly likely that there is MORE than one theme in your movie, but just choose one and go for it! Remember, I am looking for a THEME that we have discussed all semester, not an event. WWII and the Vietnam War are events, not themes. Approx. 1 page. Provide Time Stamps. Label Section: Faith Integration 2) Faith Integration part. Please relate some part of the film to the Christian faith. This section is for you to pursue your artistic freedom. No matter what film you watch, I assure you there is some instance or analogy of faith, or the lack there of. You are not simply looking for someone praying or going to church in this section, but something much deeper than that. Approx. 1 page. Provide Time Stamps. Label Section: Favorite Part 3) Provide your favorite part of the movie. In this section, please write a brief section on the part of the movie that you found to be the most intriguing. Again, the more excited you are about this the better you will do. Demonstrate to me that you watched the movie and maybe even enjoyed it....or at least were deeply disturbed by the film. Approx. 1 page. Provide Time Stamps. Extra Credit for the inquisitive minds: Whose photo does Hitler have on the wall of his personal room inside his bunker? Why is this important? (You can use outside sources for this). EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: You must use at least three different parts (and hopefully more!) of the movie for these sections. Do not use the same examples in all three sections. By using different parts of the movie, you will demonstrate to me that you watched the entire movie. In short, if your theme, faith integration, and favorite part are all the same part of the movie, minimal credit will be awarded. Extremely Important: Put the time stamp from the movie in all sections and in your answers and always explain any answer that you give. All answers MUST come from the movie itself. No outside sources are wanted, nor needed for this particular project. To “cite” your answer, please use the time code from the movie’s time bar. Be sure to do this EVERY TIME you use a piece of evidence to answer a question or when you refer to the movie. The more pieces of evidence you use to back up your statements, the better you will do. The more pieces of flair, the better off you will be! Follow this format: After watching this movie, seeing Germans speak in English in other movies looks weird. by Stephen David THEME Vegetarianism- After you state your theme, continue writing here with your claims and of course your evidence from the movie. Adolf Hitler was very short, had a bad mustache, and ate vegetarian meals and this made him a bad leader. For example, in the film blah blah blah…..and so on and so forth and Scooby Scooby Do-Wap. (1:10:23-1:-13:50) Be sure to BOLD the Time Stamps so I can find them easily. Ideally in this section, you would have two to three PARAGRAPHS that each have claims and ample evidence that support your original claim of a theme. It is very important that when you transition to the next section to follow this pattern. DO NOT put HUGE spaces between each section or go to the next page to try and “stretch” your paper. I can conduct a simple word count to see how long your paper is. Although there is a suggestion for the length, content is the most important factor. After you finish a section simply hit “ENTER” and start the next section as I have done right here. FAITH INTEGRATION Tell me about instances of faith or analogies of faith and again, back it up with evidence and use time stamps. (45:20-48:20) Avoid using huge chunks of time stamps that include 10-20 minutes of the movie as I will question exactly what you are referring to. You are welcome here to use more than one instance of faith in this section if you like. THERE ARE PLENTY OF EXAMPLES IN THE MOVIE OR I WOULD NOT BE ASKING THIS QUESTION. FAVORITE PART One of my favorite answers here is as follows: My favorite part of the film was the ending! Although this is clever and witty, I do not suggest doing this as it shows me you did not take the project seriously. The movie may not be your choice for a Friday night film or a date night movie, but I assure you that it has historical value and more important present day life value. Be sure to use Time Stamps. (8:32-9:51) Movie Review- This assignment will test/sharpen each student's reading/comprehension and writing skills and their ability to connect historical themes discussed in class with historical themes presented. I will provide a copy of the movie, The Downfall (Der Untergang) via e-mail, however, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain a usable copy of their movie. The movie may be obtained on Netflix, from the HOPE library, or it may be purchased from an online vendor for a minimal fee. Guidelines with detailed instructions regarding the paper will be posted on ECompanion. A hard copy of the Movie Review MUST be turned in to the professor and it MUST be submitted to ECompanion. Failure to do EITHER of these by the DUE DATE listed on the syllabus will result in a 0 for the project. I do not accept papers via e-mail. The due date for the paper is Apr. 21st.
