SOC 120 Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility

ashford university

Description

In this course, you have looked at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. You have also examined different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue.

Choose an ethical issue to write about. You may choose from the list below or, with approval from the instructor, select a different socially-relevant topic. It is recommended that you choose a topic that you are familiar with or that you have some interest in exploring further. For the purposes of this paper, your topic should pertain to a current area of interest in the news and/or government policy forums.

  • Domestic surveillance

In your paper, you will apply ethical theories and perspectives to the issue that you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts, aiming to be both balanced and intellectually driven in your work. You may share your personal views, but do not rely on opinions (yours or those offered by others) to make your case. Think about the evidence that helps to make your case and use it.

Address the following questions:

  • What are the ethical issues?
  • Where are there breaches of ethical behavior?
  • How could each ethical theory you cite help people think about what constitutes virtuous or ethical behavior?

The paper must be 1500-1800 words in length (excluding title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style. Excluding the textbook, you must use at least five scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library to support your claims. You can also use the Sociology Research Guide located in the Ashford University Library. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page.

Ethics refers to the code of conduct and behaviors that are governed by a combination of
personal, legal, moral and social standards regarding what is right (Trevino & Nelson, 2016).
The context of what is right varies with cultures and communities. The meaning of ethics in the
context of community intervention is defined under the various guiding principles that are both
agreed by the community activists and the service providers.
No harm is the rule number one in morals and ethics (Hausman et al. 2016). The principle
may mean conducting no intervention services at all to prevent the participants from harm
through substitution of what they have. Various questions may be asked before embarking on an
intervention: What are the effects of the proposed intervention, the situations to which the
proposed intervention is to be applied and the accompanying negative effects, effectiveness and
whether the intervention will make life more beneficial than normal.
The respect for people and treatment of each as being unique and not as social or political
numbers of calculation is another principle of ethics (Gasper, 2016). Respect for the participant’s
ability in the playing of a role in determining what they need, dropping the assumption of that
only the professionals understand the problems faced by the community in the problem
identification. Respecting everyone’s right as well as performing to ones best under all
circumstances are among the principles emphasized in the maintenance of ethics in the process
of conducting community intervention.
Ethical behaviors in the process of community intervention refer to the treatment of
individuals, money and information and the general actions of employees and the organization.
The actions and behaviors that an individual possess especially in secretive places of work relate

to the ethics that the person holds. Recommended behaviors in work institutions are therefore
much emphasized.
Confidentiality is among the behaviors of recommendation in workplaces. It is among the
most familiar of the ethical practices known as it is more susceptible to the violation.
