After intense research and trend analysis, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)
Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) decided to
formulate the IOM report, which was geared at helping nurses advance in their education,
practice and competency, helping them to deliver better and reliable medical services. The report
was crafted after research indicated that nursing practice has stagnated in advancement and
development for a long period, as compared to the rapid changes in population, development of
new disease and changes to the treatment of the commonly known diseases (Altman, Butler &
Shern, 2016). The report presented by the IOM and RWJF focusses on advancing and
strategizing on how to improve nurses’ education, leadership, collaboration, data, diversity and
practice. Their main agenda was to prepare nurses and the nursing environment to ensure that
