Differentiate between the ways in which Germans & Japanese have addressed their nations’ culpability for the millions of deaths & the devastation associated with WWII & consider the motivations for the responses.
Germany has spent its time post war trying to atone for the atrocities. Germany is currently a world leader in diplomacy and declared a holiday for the end of fascism. Germany has confronted the devastation of Nazi Germany and have participated continually in remembrance of those lost and has adopted one of the most progressive stances on human rights in the world. Japan has been criticized for its emphasis on the violence that was felt toward them at the time of their aggression. Their apology was not taken as seriously because it lacked the holistic confrontation to the devastation in parts of Asia, some moments of complete denial of violence in stating it helped the industrial movements and liberation from Europe. Germany made efforts to teach the history and create memorials and museums to “never forget” the atrocities. Japan’s acknowledgement has been widely understood to be less forthright and genuine.
