The Amish Documentary Reflection
The Amish are a religious subculture in America and Canada, recognizably distinct from
other religious subcultures, making them a source of curiosity from outside communities. With a
population of over 250,000, the Amish maintain close-knit communities that are based on a
conservative culture (PBS American Experience). Despite their existence in relatively small
communities, the Amish origin is in 18th century Europe where they escaped persecution, mostly
from Swiss/German descent. The uniqueness of the Amish subculture is derived from their
adherence to strict norms, customs different from the broader society. According to the
documentary, the Amish lifestyle is similar to the pre-Industrial Revolution America, dominated
by rural lifestyles without modern conveniences like electricity and automobiles (PBS American
