Changing the System Assignment In this assignment, you will write a paper about something you would like to change in your workplace. You will describe what you want to change, as well as why and how you will go about doing this. We are asking you to do this because as you continue in your career—or maybe you are already there, you will see things that should change. Knowing how to do this constructively is invaluable. Examples of past projects for this class include: implementing a new form of charting, changing the way medical waste is disposed, and changing the format of shift report. Note that you must be the person with the power to implement the change. For example, getting your boss to change communication styles would not be appropriate since you can’t make that change, only your boss can. Ideally, you will focus on a health care setting. However, if you do not yet have a job in a health care environment, you may chose any workplace you have recently had. We have had very good papers about Starbucks, grocery stores, you name it. Because it is a classic change theory, we want you to apply Lewin’s Theory of Change and use it to guide your plan. However, there are many other models and theories of change and you are welcome to reference them as well in your work. Submit the assignment as directed in Blackboard: Click on the “SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT HERE” button. Upload to Turnitin. Directions First, set the scene for your project by describing where you work and what you want to change: 1. Describe your immediate workplace, i.e., the system you work in. What is its function? How many employees? Who is being served? 2. Briefly explain the hierarchy of your workplace system. Focus on the immediate unit or department you work in, but you may also include organizational levels beyond your unit, if you like. 3. State and explain what you would like to change and why. Next, apply theoretical concepts to your idea: 1. Describe Lewin’s Change Theory and differentiate the phases of change unfreezing, change, and refreezing. Which phase are you in now? Explain. 2. Describe the term Equilibrium. How does equilibrium affect your change project at your workplace? 3. Describe the mechanism of unfreezing as it applies to your workplace and project. Examples would be educating the staff about what your proposal is. Maybe this is through posters, staff huddle, etc. 4. Define the term “driving forces,” then list the driving forces for your change and what you plan to do to strengthen those forces. 5. Define the term “restraining forces,” then list the forces restraining your change idea and how you plan to weaken them. Start the planning process: 1. Assess your knowledge and skills needed to make the change you want. Do you know what is necessary and how to do it? Answer yes/no and describe. 2. Think about the non-rational elements in you workplace such as values, attitudes, and role relationships that might affect your plan. The hardest part of organization change is convincing others to make the change. Write about this as it applies to your workplace. 3. List possible supporters for your change. Consider family, friends, co-workers, fellow students, faculty. Specifically, what will you ask supporters to do? How often are they supposed to do what you ask them? 4. Write at least three behavioral objectives for you Change Plan. There are many good internet resources on this topic, for instance: https://academics.pnw.edu/nursing/writingbehavioral-objectives/ 5. Describe tactics to achieve your change. These might include education (say how); fund raising; persuasion (maybe you need to present your idea to a manager), and many more. Wrap it up: 1. Define Lewin’s idea of refreezing and then describe how you will ensure the change you made stays in place 2. What is your plan for evaluating your progress? Describe this explicitly. Will you do a survey? Will you watch behavior? Changing the System Paper Rubric Possible Earned Criteria Points Points 5 Describe the system you work in: Example, you work at Starbucks, a café. 5 Briefly Explain the hierarchy of the system. Example, at the local level, there is a manager, a shift lead, and multiple baristas. Hint: You can include a diagram, if you like. 5 State the name of change & need for change project. Example, we need color-coded coffee stirrers so that people don’t mix-up decaf with regular coffee. 5 Discuss what you, the nurse, (or in our example, the barista) can offer the system—this means, describe your role in the organization and how you can be a change agent. 5 Describe the term Equilibrium and how it relates to your change project. How does Equilibrium affect change your change project? 5 Describe Lewin’s Change Theory and differentiate the phases of change. Name the phase your project is in now and explain why that phase applies to your project. 5 Describe mechanisms of unfreezing 5 Define driving forces. What are your driving forces? How do you plan to strengthen them? 5 Define restraining forces. What are your restraining forces? How do you plan to weaken them? 5 Assess your knowledge & skills related to the planned change. 5 Describe how values, attitudes, behaviors, thoughts and role relationships with change target group may impact the planned change 5 Who are the supporters of your change; what will you ask them to do? 10 Write Behavioral objectives for your proposed change. Include at least three for full credit 5 Choice of strategy: Address your non rational elements and the likelihood of habit formation 5 Tactics appropriate for your chosen change strategy. 5 Define Refreezing: Describe the processes you will incorporate in your plan to ensure that the changes implemented are frozen. Comments 5 10 100 Plan for evaluating your progress. Organization (use of headings, subheadings & transitional words, APA format, grammar, syntax (sentence structure), was criteria addressed succinctly, & use of examples to support your assertions. Remember, do not use the first person (“I”) in scholarly writing.

Lewin’s Change Theory
I am a passionate worker at the non-profit geriatric clinic where I am a nurse manager in charge
of quality assurance. The clinic focuses on the medication and meeting the medical needs of the
seniors like the Onlok system in San Francisco. We have a total of five registered nurses who
work for the clinic in ensuring quality health care for the elderly.
The hierarchical structure of the clinic starts begins with the board of directors who make
decisions for the clinic. The management and advisory board follow as it exercises the decisions
made by the directors where the corporate sector and the clinical department follow. On the
corporate unit, the purchases are managed, the finances, strategies, human resource, and the
administration. On the clinical department, there are the physicians the nurse managers, the
nurses and then the ancillary service providers.

Lewin’s Change Theory
I plan to change the act of bullying between the nurses in the clinic. Some nurses tend to
bully the others especially the new old nurses bully the new nurses. This has been a form of
culture where the old nurses to have more real power than the new nurses which is very unethical
in the health service provision. I have acquired communication skills that will help me in
discussing the behavior with the nurses. I have done some research on the dangers of bullying in
the workplace for both the nurses being bullied and the bully so that I can convince them to stop
exercising the behavior. My plan may be affected by non-rational elements like attitude because
it may lead to miscommunication. This makes it hard for me to convince them to cease
practicing the bully behavior. I have unending support from my family, my fellow students, and
co-workers who are not happy with this behavior. They all give me moral support by advising
me on the best type of strategies to use when communicating with the nurses. My fellow students
help me in research on how to communicate with nurses and how to facilitate behavior change at
the workplace primarily in the healthcare sector. My coworkers are there to help me in
convincing the nurses about stopping the bullying.
I have acquired tactics that will help me in convincing them like being persuasive and
educating them on why they stop the behavior. During the stage of persuasion, I will cultivate
my language to persuade them, and then I will use evidence to approach them and appeal their
logic and emotions. BY the use of these persuasive strategies I can succeed in convincing them. I
can also educate them on the dangers of bullying like causing stress which can make them
convinced.
In my plan to implement change, I will put Levin’s Theory of change into the application.
It will involve three stages...
