Definition of Social Determinants of Health
According to Berkman, Kawachi & Glymour (2014), social determinants of health are the
economic and social conditions that in which people are born with, the lifestyle of a population,
the work conditions and their age that can affect an individual or a population. The population
with poor economic and social resources is more likely to suffer from poor health as compared to
the well up the population.
Social Determinants of Health
Some of these social determinants of health include first, the resources available to a
population to meet their basic needs where the poor people are likely to have no or less access to
the basic need and thus putting their lives at risk of health hazards as compared to the
economically advantaged people. The poor population will rarely access good education, good
health care services and good and secure employment where such conditions lead them to
psychological conditions that lead to poor health and reduction in the life expectancy of the
population. Second, poor social circumstances have a powerful effect on a person health and can
end up causing long-term stress to an individual. The psychological risks accumulate over the
time due to a stressful life and result in increased poor mental health and eventually lead to
premature deaths (Berkman, Kawachi & Glymour, 2014).
