SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
AND RACE

A KEY FACT THAT EXPLAINS RACISM AND ITS
EFFECTS
• The socio-economic status difference between the African Americans and the EuroAmericans is a clear demonstration of the racism issue in the US.
• As Marger (2014) observes, African Americans experience higher poverty, unemployment, and
low-income rates than Euro-Americans.
• For example, the proportion of African Americans experiencing poverty, 27%, is close to three
times higher than the proportion of Euro-Americans, 9.9%.
• Also, African Americans' median household income constitutes only 54% of that of whites.

• A similar trend extends to household wealth, with African Americans cumulatively owning

• Consequently, this extends to their labor market outcomes, with blacks occupying most of
the low-paying occupations and being underrepresented in high-income jobs.

• The overall effects of this racism include lower quality of life, poor income insecurity, and
economic inequality for the black community.

WAYS TO ACKNOWLEDGE SYSTEMIC INJUSTICES
AND INEQUALITIES
• One way to end systemic injustices and inequities is to acknowledge their existence.
• People must acknowledge the existence of structures and policies that contribute to economic...
