Why Colleges Should Offer More Cultural Studies Courses
Cultural studies have gradually become popular worldwide due to the constant campaigns
on the importance of teaching students about their culture and those of other people. Cultural
studies involve an interdisciplinary field examining contemporary culture's political dynamics,
including popular culture and its historical basis. Additionally, researchers mostly investigate
how cultural practices associated with wider power systems are linked with, or function through,
social phenomena. These include class structures, ideologies, ethnicity, sexual orientation,
gender, and ethnicity. Although cultural studies are sometimes inaccurate, this essay argues that
colleges should offer more cultural study courses because they help learners understand different
ways of doing things, prepare for the changing world, learn new languages understand other
people better, re-evaluate biases, and enhance empathy.
Understanding Different Ways of Doing Things
Cultural studies expose learners to different people's cultures, helping them to understand
how different people do things. Notably, cultural practices have often made people oppress
others since diversities make people feel different from each other. For instance, Taylor et al.
(214) claim that people of color living in the United States have often faced hostility since they
are stereotyped as criminals. Although it is difficult to drop some cultural practices, people must
discard evil and degrading cultures such as discrimination. When students interact with different
cultures through cultural studies, they realize that life has various approaches and that their

uncivilized realize that the notion is wrong. Additionally, when such individuals learn about
other cultures, they develop new styles of thinking, solving, and approaching issues. Therefore,
when colleges offer more cultural studies courses, they equip learners with new skills in handling
issues and help them to interact with people from different cultures.
Preparing Learners to Cope with the Changing World
The world is rapidly changing and becoming smaller due to the technological evolution
that has eased interaction between people from different parts of the globe. People traveling
abroad will likely encounter individuals from different cultures. Undertaking cultural studies
exposes students to different cultures that exist in the world, exposing them to other people's
beliefs, habits, and ways of doing things (Surber 204). The exposure is crucial since it equips the
learners with the skill of tolerating cultural diversity. Besides, the studies enl...
