Jeffersonian World View
Yeoman refers to a farmer who owned a modest farm and operated on the farm primarily
with the family labor remains an embodiment of ideal American: hardworking, virtuous, honest
and independent. These values made the yeomen farmers significant to the republican vision of
new nation. The term varied over different centuries. By the year 1841, it was used by freehold
farmers who were slightly higher compared to tenant and copyhold farmers.
The Yeoman Farmer was bedrock of the economy of America and American democracy.
