Fraud and corruption in nonprofit organizations
Introduction
The non-profit making organizations, just like any other organizations, are faced with
multiple social challenges. One of the problems that these groups are encountered with is
corruption. Among the many definitions of the term, corruption refers to the fraudulent activities
that are committed by individuals occupying positions of power and mostly involves the use of
bribery. Traditionally, individuals have been of the opinion that corruption only exists among
government organizations and commercial institutions. However, recent revelations indicate that
there is an increasing level of corruption among the non-profit making institutions. So serious is

country in the event it is not addressed comprehensively.

impacts on the lives of the people. Due to the nature of the work that they do, the institutions
have been increasing their presence in the communities. In most cases, they reach out to the
communities where neither the government nor the commercial institutions may reach. In
poverty-stricken communities, the nonprofit organizations play a critical role in empowering the
individuals so that they may improve their standards of living.
The nonprofit organizations are not immune to corruption, fraud, abuse, and waste. In
fact, reports suggest that in the recent years the cases of corruption and fraud have been on the
rise among the institutions. It is essential to take note that corruption is both a social and
economic crime that most countries have been fighting for a long time (Bryce, 201...
