Student A carries out a reaction that gives off methane gas and obtains a total volume by water displacement of 338 mL at a temperature of 19* C and a pressure of 0.9566 atm. Student B does the experiment on another day and collects 350 mL at a temperature of 26*C and a pressure of 0.989 atm. Which student collect more CH4?

Use the formula pV = nRT where n is the number of moles, R = 8.134 J/(K* mol), p is pressure, T is absolute temperature, and V is volume.

Student A. p = 0.9566 atm = 0.9566*1.013*10^5 Pa = 9.690*10^4 Pa;

V = 338 mL = 0.338 L = 3.38*10^(-4) m^3;  T = 19 + 273 =292 K

Collected  n = pV/(RT) = 9.69*10^4*3.38*10^(-4) / (8.134*292) = 0.0138 mol of CH4

Student B. p = 0.989 atm = 0.989 * 1.013*10^5 Pa = 1.002*10^5 Pa;

V = 350 mL = 0.350 L = 3.50 * 10^(-4) m^3; T = 26 + 273 = 299 K

Collected n = pV/(RT) = 1.002*10^5 * 3.50*10^(-4) / (8.134*299) = 0.0144 mol of CH4.

The student B has collected more CH4.
